What is the German Purity Law?

The Reinheitsgebot was established in 1516 in Bavaria and is one of the oldest food safety laws in the world. It originally allowed brewers to use only water, barley, and hops in their beer (yeast was later added once its role in fermentation was understood). The goal was to maintain quality, prevent price inflation of bread grains, and protect consumers from harmful additives.
